Routes

The Routes module is a specialized geographic tool designed for tourism, travel packages, guided tours, or multi-location event planning. It allows you to link multiple Events or Places into a sequential itinerary, complete with map visualizations and capacity limits.

Creating a Travel Route​

To map out a new itinerary:

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Routes.
  2. Click the "Add New" button.

1. Basic Info & Settings​

  • Name: The title of the tour or route (e.g., "Historical City Walking Tour").
  • Description: A detailed explanation of what the route covers.
  • Status: Draft, Published, Hidden, or Pre-Request (for gathering interest before confirming dates).
  • Travel Mode: How will attendees move between points? Choose Walking, Driving, or Bicycling. This is used by the map API to calculate realistic transit times.
  • Price Type: Choose Per Person (each individual buys a ticket) or Package (e.g., buying the whole tour for a group of up to 4 people).
  • Package Capacity: If Package is selected, specify the maximum number of people allowed in one package.
  • Date Start & End: The overall timeframe for this entire route.
  • Buffer Minutes: The mandatory rest or transit time (in minutes) required between sequential events on the route.

2. Events & Timeline (The Itinerary)​

This is the core of the Routes module. You build the itinerary by adding existing Events (which have locations tied to them).

  • Add Event: Click "Add Event" to search and add specific events to the timeline.
  • Drag & Drop Sorting: Once added, you can drag and drop the events to reorder the itinerary.
  • Timeline Validation: The system will automatically validate your timeline! It checks if the physical distance (based on the chosen Travel Mode) and the Buffer Minutes allow enough time to travel from Event A to Event B. If not, a red warning will appear.
  • Smart Suggestions: Clicking "Suggest Events" will query the system to find other events happening nearby within the route's timeframe that could fit into the itinerary.

3. Map Preview​

  • As you add and sort events, a dynamic Google Maps preview will generate showing the exact path the route takes.

4. Waypoints (Optional Stops)​

  • Waypoints: If you want to add specific stops that are not formal Events in your system (e.g., "Lunch at the Park", "Photo Stop at the Bridge"), you can add custom Waypoints with a title and an address.
  1. Click "Save" to publish the route and allow users to book the itinerary.
